Sonia cannot build a Roman empire here: Basu

Veteran CPI(M) leader, Jyoti Basu, today rejected the opposition to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, becoming the Prime Minister, and said she cannot build a ``Roman empire'' here.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Basu said Ms. Gandhi had invited his party to join the coalition Government during their 20-minute one-to-one meeting earlier in the day. He told her that ``the party will decide'' on the issue.

Asked about objections to Ms. Gandhi's foreign origin, he said ``how can they object? Under what section of the Constitution can they object? She is an Indian citizen, married to an Indian. She is the leader of a major political party. It is for the Congress to put forward who will be its leader''.

Comment: Jyoti Basu was the long term political leader of CPI(M) and the chief minister of West Bengal. With his and CPI(M)'s support, Sonia Gandhi is on the way of becoming the next Indian Prime Minister after her Congress Party and the secular alliance handed in a stunning defeat to the Hindu Nationalist party BJP.

This is an amazing progress. A Christian born Italian citizen will become Indian PM. Even the West cannot compete with Indian liberalism at least in this regard. Unlike many other Western democratic nations, India is not unfamiliar turf for the woman Prime Minister. Indira Gandhi was the first one, and now her daughter-in-law will become the next one. The Hindu nationalist party BJP tried to put all kinds of obstacles, they used Sonia's "foreignness" as a big issue in the election, but the people of India rejected their absurd politics.
