Good Night Moon, Good Night Stars - a Poem

Good night moon, good night stars
Goodnight the wind of whisper
Burning light, rotating fan
Good night the sleepy heads
My friends, far afar

Let the night angel come
Like the dropping rain
Of a receding summer

Let the dreams soothe the soul
Awash the worries of work,
Driving away wars
Drumbeats muffle the cries
Here and there
In the lands of nowhere

Good night moon, good night stars
Good night the blind wanderer
Grumbling fright, pulsating plan
Good night the fluffy breads
The jittery platter

My English Translation of the song lyrics
Enchanted illusion filled
Forest wanderer deer
Is a deep dream seeker
Why pledge to catch her
Without any reason
Let her stay lost in her mind
Far far away
I will only touch her soul
With the tune of the flute
Without any reason
She will be startled
By the heavy spring drizzle
Thunder from the sky
Will ease into her ear
My heart will be restless
Without any reason
From far away I will seek her,
Will tie her in secret sorrowful bond
That tie is invisible, untied
Without any reason

Bash Baganer Mathar Upor Chaand Utheche Oi - Instrumental Music of a Nostalgic Bangla Song

Instrumental music of a nostalgic Bangla song. Lyricist was Jatindramohan Bagchi (1878 - 1948), music director was Sudhin Dasgupta (1929 - 1982) and singer was Pratima Bandopadhyay. The song is about a little girl reminiscing her elder sister who has recently passed away, but the meaning of death is incomprehensible to the little girl.
Lyrics:
Bash baganer mathar upor
chaand utheche oi
Mago amaar sholok bolaa
kajlaa didi koi
Pukur pare lebur toley
Thokay thokay jonak joley
Fuler gondhey ghum ashena
Taito jegey roi
Mago amaar sholok bolaa
Kajla didi koi
Shedin hotey keno maa aar
Didirey naa dako
Didir kothay achol diye
Mukhti keno dhako
Mukhti keno dhako
Lebur toley pukur parey
Jhijhi dakey jhopey jharey
Fuler gondhey ghum ashenaa
Taito jegey roi
Ratri holo mago amaar
Kajla didi koi

My English translation (without the poetic metrics or prosody)
Above the head of bamboo garden
that moon has risen
Mother, where is my story teller
sister Kajla?
Beside the pond, under the lime tree
Bunch of fireflies glow
Sleep hasn't arrived
because of flower's fragrance
So I stay awake
Mother, where is my story teller
sister Kajla?
From that day
Why ma don't call my sister
Hearing her name
Why do you cover your face
with your garment's edge?
Why do you cover your face?
Under the lime tree, beside the pond
Jhi Jhi insects call from the bushes
Sleep hasn't arrived
because of flower's fragrance
So I stay awake
It is night, mother,
Where is my sister Kajla?

Achey Shudhu Alo

Tai Lagey Bhalo
Shei Chenay Hoy Jodii

My English Translation (could not preserve the Bangla poetic essence or rhythm):

Evening shadow descends
Disarrayed winds
Feels good singing
This song of life
One and two stars twinkle
In sky's cradle
What dreams wave
in timid eyes
In that seven colourful colour
Mind gets lost
Can the lost mind return ever?
Evening shadow descends
Disarrayed winds
Feels good singing
This song of life
After the darkness I know
There is only light
Hence, knowing the unknown stranger
feels good
If in that knowing the unknown
Something more is received
Then how will be the capacity
of this soul's looking back?
Evening shadow descends
Disarrayed winds
Feels good singing
This song of life

Instrumental music of a Hindi song from a 1983 movie titled Masoom. Lyricist was Gulzar. Music Director: RD Barman. Singer: Anup Ghosal.

English Transliteration

Tujhse Naaraaz Nahiin Zindagi
Hairaan Hoon Main
O Hairaan Huun Main
Tere Masum Sawaalon Se Pareshaan Hoon Main
O Pareshaan Hoon Main

Jeene Ke Liye Sochaa Hi Nahi
Dard Sambhaalane Honge

Jeene Ke Liye Sochaa Hi Nahi
Dard Sambhaalane Honge

Muskuraaye To, Muskuraane Ke Karz Utarne Honge
Muskuraauun Kabhii To Lagataa Hai
Jaise Honthon Pe Karz Rakhaa Hai

Ho Tujhse Naaraaz Nahiin Zindagi
Hairaan Hoon Main
O Hairaan Huun Main

[Zindagii Tere Gam Ne Hamein
Rishte Naye Samajhaaye ]2

Mile Jo Hamein Dhoop Mein Mile
Chaanv Ke Thande Saaye

Ho Tujhse Naaraaz Nahin Zindagi
Hairaan Hoon Main
O Hairaan Huun Main

Aaj Agar Bhar Aai Hain
Boondein Baras Jaayengi
Kal Kyaa Pataa Inke Liye
Aankhein Taras Jaayengi
Jaane Kab Gum Kahaan Khoyaa
Ek Ansuun Chhupaake Rakhaa Thaa

Ho Tujhse Naaraaz Nahin Zindagi
Hairaan Hoon Main
O Hairaan Huun Main

Tere Masum Sawaalon Se Pareshaan Hoon Main
O Pareshaan Hoon Main

English Translation (Source: www.hindilyrics.net/translation-Mas…hi-Zindagi.html)

tujhse naaraz nahin zindagi hairan hoon main
I am not upset with you, life.. I am astonished

tere masoom sawaalon se pareshan hoon main
I am distressed by your innocent questions

jeene ke liye sochaa hi nahin dard sambhaalne honge
I did not think that in order to live, I would have to take care of woes...

muskuraye to muskurane ke karz utaarne honge
To smile, I would have to take on the debt of smiling

muskuraye jo kabhi to lagta hai jaise hothon pe karz rakha hai
If I were to smile, it seems that I would have to incure this debt upon my lips

aankh agar bhar aai hain boondein baras jayengi
Today, if my eyes fill with tears, then they will fall...

kal kya pata kis ke liye aankhen taras jayengi
Who knows whom these eyes will wait for tomorrow...

jaane kahan gum hua kahan kho gaya
Who knows where I lost...

ek aansoo chhupa ke rakha tha
The one tear I had kept hidden...

zindagi tere gham ne hume rishte naye samjhaye
Life, your sorrows have taught us new bonds...

dhoop mein mile jo bhi mile pyar ke thande saaye...
Whomever you shall meet in the sunlight, you will feel the cool shade of love...

Gausul Azam Baba - Instrumental Music of a Maij Vandari Song

Gausul Azam Baba - Recently I've listened to this song which is a form of spiritual song known as "Maij Vandari", that I rendered in my keyboard. I remember listening to this type of song in my childhood and if I am not mistaken Maij Vandari songs are from the hilly place of Chittagong, a natural beauty of our world containing large leafy mountains and also is closed to one of the longest continuous sea shores with the sandy beach and the bluest crushing waves.

Shukno Patar Nupur Paye - Instrumental Music of a song by poet Kazi Nazrul Islam

Instrumental music of a song originally written and composed by legendary Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam close to a century ago. It was my hard fought attempt to play this beautiful song that still needs more work to even dare the allusive perfection. The more I delve into Nazrul's music, his sheer brilliance as a music composer and lyricist becomes clearer.

Lyrics in Bangla (Source: http://lyricsbags.blogspot.ca/2013/03/shukno-patar-nupur-paye-mila.html

My English Translation of this beautiful song with apologies to poet Nazrul's rebel soul and his millions of fans around the world for not matching the poet's poetic essence:

Wearing dry leaves' anklets on feet
dancing like a whirlwind
Creating sparkling sparkling waves
in water's sinuous curves
She goes

In the chest of the lake
the flower shotodol vibrates
While the flower Bokul embraces
the flower Chapa's base
From the ecstatic fountain
water flows down
While she sings
on the road of field

Creating sparkling sparkling waves
in water's sinuous curves
She goes

Dress of wild flowers,
taken off and thrown
disarrayed hair is spread
to the world
The crazy girl keeps dancing
helter-skelter
on dusty and ash coloured feet

Creating sparkling sparkling waves
in water's sinuous curves
She goes

Iran's girl is like the desert traveller
The edge of a village,
loser of mind in the forest
Suddenly run the embracer of "Boirik"
in sand castle filled villages

Creating sparkling sparkling waves
in water's sinuous curves
She goes
Wearing dry leaves' anklets on feet
dancing like a whirlwind
Creating sparkling sparkling waves
in water's sinuous curves
She goes

Eid Mubarak - Ramjaner Oi Rojar Sheshe Elo Khushir Eid - Instrumental Music

Eid Mubarak to all my family, friends and everyone, here and abroad. Wishing the joy and happiness throughout your life.

Instrumental music I played in my oldie keyboard "Ramjaner Oi Rojar Sheshe Elo Khusir Eid" - a song composed by the Bengali rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam close to a century ago. He lived from 1899 to 1976. Nazrul's music, poem and writings reverberate the themes of humanity, freedom and love. He wrote against fascism and oppression during its frenzied climb, and was always against any kinds of bigotry and intolerance, he was for the emancipation of forgotten and poverty stricken mass.

This particular song is very popular in the Bengali speaking world, many prominent singers performed this many times. I have distinct memories from my early childhood, listening to this song in the evening when the moon was sighted for the on coming Eid celebration.

Eid Mubarak to everyone!

English Transliteration:

O mon Romjaner oi rojar sheshe

Elo khushir Eid
Tui Aponake aaj biliye de
Shoan asmani tagid

Tor shona daana balakhana

Shob rahe lillah
De jakat murda muslime aaj
Bhangaite niid

Tui porbi eider namajre mon

Shei she eidgahe
Je moydane shob gaji muslim
hoyeche shohid

Aaj Bhule giye dost dushmon

haat melao haate
tor prem diye kor bishsho nikhil
Islame murid

Jara jibon bhore rakhche roja

Nitto upobashi
Shei gorib etim miskine de
Ja kichu mufid

Daal Hridoye tor Toshtorite

Shrini Touhider
Tor dawat kobul korben hojrot
Hoy mone ummid

Tore marlo chure jibon jure

Eat pathor jara
Shei pathor diye tolre gore
Premeri moshjid

I thought of translating it by myself, then a few key strokes search led me to an excellent site that is dedicated to Nazrul's works. From this site www.nazrul.org the following English translation of this song is obtained. My friend Farooq bhai (Dr. Mohammad Omar Farooq) translated it in 2006. Source link: www.nazrul.org/nazrul_works/faro…z_ramadan_eid.htm

English Translation (by Dr. Mohammad Omar Farooq)

O heart, Ramadan has come to an end,

and the happy Eid knocks at the door for all,
Come, today give yourself away wholeheartedly,
heed the divine call.

Offer all your wealth and treasure
for the sake of your Benevolent Lord,
Pay zakat to awaken the dying Muslims,
from the slumber that they can't afford.

Come, O heart, offer your Eid prayer

in that sacred plain,
where valiant Muslims sacrificed their lives
and became martyrs, not in vain.

Let's forget today who is friend or foe,

and hold each other in caring embrace.
Let your love be the magnet
to bring the humanity to Allah's grace.

Remember those in perennial fast,

constantly in hunger and deprivation,
Share with the poor, orphans and the destitutes,
to make inclusive your celebration.

Pour into the bowl of your heart

the ambrosia of tawheed.
The Prophet himself might accept the invitation,
and come to join your feast, indeed.

O heart, with the very stones or bricks

that some people hurled at you all along,
build a wonderful mosque of love
with foundation, solid and strong.

Ak Seconder Nai Bhorosha - Instrumental Music of a Bangla Song

Instrumental music of a song I remember listening long time ago. A legendary singer from Bangladesh, Firoz Shai sang this song, even at one of his very last concerts.

Transliteration from Bangla:
Ak Seconder Nai Bhorosha
Bondho Hoibo Rong Tamasha
Chokhhu Mudile hayre dom furaile
Rongin Rongin Dalan Kotha
Dami Dami Gari
Jomi Joma Ghor Loia
Koro Kara Kari
Are Share Tiin haat jaygaow hoyna
Share tiin haat
Share tiin haat jaygao hoyna matir monjile
Chokkhu mudile, hayre dom furaile
Shada Kalo Koto Ronger Koto Rokom Manush
Ai Duniyar Jolsha Ghore Poira Thake Behush
Ai Gana Bajna Shesh Hoibo Gana Bajna
Are Gana Bajna Shesh Hoibo Nesha Furaile
Chokkhu Mudile hayre dom furaile

English Translation:
No guarantee for a second
All colourful shows will stop
when eyes close, alas! when breathing ends
Colorful homes and buildings
Expensive cars
You wrangle over land properties and homes
But even three and half hand length
space is not given in the home of earth
when eyes close, alas! when breathing ends
White, black, so many colorful human beings are there
in this world's music hall, lying unconscious
These songs and music will end, these songs and music
Yes, these songs and music will end when addiction ends
when eyes close, alas! when breathing ends

My English translation, sorry, could not preserve the poetic essence intact:

You are Rahim, You are Karim, You are Rahaman
Forgive my sins God the merciful

You are the owner, you are the giver and I am the sinner
Need your sympathy
Today if you are not in favor
I return with tears
God I have no other way
Storm has risen in my river of sorrow
I am stressed ruminating how can I cross this river

You are Rahim, You are Karim, You are Rahaman
Forgive my sins God the merciful

Human being who is the best creation in your world
Feels very helpless today
Some in disease, some in grief and some in danger
die restless alas!
God, in hope and despair
You make us cry, you make us laugh
Everything is your glory
End all the sorrows of this poor soul

You are Rahim, You are Karim, You are Rahaman
Forgive my sins God the merciful

Barir Kache Arshi Nogor - Instrumental Music of Fakir Lalon Shah

This is an instrumental music of a song composed by Fakir Lalon Shah who lived from 1774 to 1890. He was born in Kushtia, now in Bangladesh, and my father lyricist Masud Karim who was born in the same district, amongst many other poets and writers, was greatly inspired by him from his childhood.
Lalon was a Bengali saint, poet, mystic, social reformer, thinker and music composer. He was also known as Mahatma Lalon Fakir and Lalon Sain. He is still praised for his universal messages of tolerance and spirituality. Many past and contemporary poets, writers, music composers, singers, thinkers and the ordinary folks like me were and are continuously inspired by his transcendental songs and poems.

In modern time, Bangladeshi legendary singer Farida Parveen sang this immortal song.
Here is the English transliteration of this song (Source:http://www.mysticsaint.info/2012/02/lalon-barir-kache-arshi-nagar.html)

Barir Kache Aarshi Nagar
shethae Porshee boshot kore
Ekghor Porshee boshot kore,
Aami ekdino na dekhilam Tare.

Geram bereogadh pani,
Nai kinara nai tarani pare.
Bancha kori dekhbo tare
Kemne shethae jaire?

Ki bolbo porshiro kotha,
Hostho pada skontho matha naire,
Khonek thake shunner upor
Khoner vashe neere.

Porshee jodi amae chuto
Jom jatona shokol jeto dure.
Shey aar Lalon ek khane roy
Tobu lokkho jojon fak re
Ami ekdino na dekhlam Tare.

Barir Kache Aarshi Nagar
shethae Porshee boshot kore
Ekghor Porshee boshot kore,
Aami ekdino na dekhilam Tare.

English Translation (Source:http://www.mysticsaint.info/2012/02/lalon-barir-kache-arshi-nagar.html)

Near my abode, there is a wondrous City of Mirror,
where my Great Neighbor lives.
Alas so near, yet I have failed my chance
to see Him even for once!

At the edge of my town there is a sea
of unfathomable depth with no sight of shore,
nor is there any boat. To meet this longing
of seeing my Mysterious Neighbor's Face,
how can I go to that placeless place?

How can I describe My indescribable Neighbor,
He Who is without form, without a norm.
For one moment His epiphany breaks here,
and the next moment He is beyond any trace of 'where',
encompassing every 'where.'

Had my Great Neighbor touched me only once,
In an instant all my sufferings would finish,
even the pangs of death would vanish.

He and Lalon dwells in the same abode,
Yet there are countless light years between them.
Alas never have I seen Him once!

Near my abode, there is a wondrous City of Mirror,
where my Great Neighbor lives.
Alas so near, yet I have failed my chance
to see Him even for once!
